I went to Ash Wednesday service for the first time in probably 12 years today. I went because I had decided to give up the consumption of alcohol for Lent, and I wanted the ritual experience to bookend my decision. How I came to decide to give something up is an interesting story.

So allea, ponderduck, Aaron and I were sitting around last night drinking and discussing religion and allea mentioned that on her recent trip to New Orleans she'd had the thought that if one was to celebrate Mardi Gras (as we were then doing, and as I'd been doing in one form or another since Friday) one ought to observe Lent.

Rather than stick around for communion, I left after the imposition of the ashes. The big grey cross on my forehead got a lot of weird looks, but I found the irony to be delicious.
