French President Jacques Chirac swallowed hard and placed a call to U.S. President George W. Bush today, who enjoyed taking the call. They talked for 20 minutes, during which time Chirac said his government was willing to take "a pragmatic approach" to the reconstruction of Iraq. White House spokesman Ari Fleischer, also enjoying himself mightily, pretended not to understand what "pragmatic" meant. We will explain it to him: Chirac was saying that "if you let me off the hook and maybe give me a small piece of the action, I'll discover that the United States is doing a great job in reconstructing Iraq. And if I fall into line, so will the Germans. And if the German left and the French right both agree what fine fellows the Americans are, your occupation will be 'Kosovoed' by the media." Fleischer should call us if there are any unanswered questions here.
